what “exclusive” means to me

Sometimes I see exclusive associated with rare or valuable, but to me exclusive reminds me of

Pretentious
Elitist
Racist (“whites only” locations)
Snobby
Unobtainable
Small
Marketing
Unaffordable
Distant
Reserved for the wealthy and privileged

An exclusive restaurant I cannot afford. An exclusive experience I’ll never have, because I don’t have the “right” connections or wasn’t born into the “right” family. Or that I may be allowed, but so many others won’t, so I feel bad that they cannot get what I can.

I don’t know, I just don’t love the word or its associations.  All I hear is myself saying, “haha, I have what you can’t get.”  And that’s never true.  You want to try to get with one of my partners?  Good luck.  They’re horribly selective and quite satisfied with their (oftentimes many relationships, including a lovely one with yours truly).

Are there times where I close myself off to new, or other, relationships? Yes.
Are there times I only want one relationship? Sure.
But is there ever a time I desire to be “exclusive” with my partner or self-describe that way? Sorry, but no.

I want my relationships to be, among many things,

Deep
Loyal
Committed
Loving
Generous
Curious
Fascinating
Commanding
Genuine

…but exclusive? Meh.
